Appalachian Spring, music by Aaron Copland, choreography by Martha Graham,
with funds from the Coolidge Foundation, premiered 1944, at the
Library of Congress in Washington DC.
This is a ballet that I thought that I would never see. The music, which
I very much love, is often featured on the radio and I have a book which
contains a single photograph of the ballet. This photograph has always
fascinated me; I couldn't imagine how the sketch like homestead would work.
I was extremely pleased when I found it had been released on DVD, and this
recording is amongst my favourite ballets. I would very much like to see
it performed live - maybe one day!
A very happy birthday to Richard Alston.
