Years ago I saw on dutch television a documentary about Le sacre du
Printemps from Igor Stravinsky. It was about a reconstruction that was made
from the first première of this ballet in 1913. It was about the
reconstruction of the costumes, of the choreography (Nijjinsky), there was
even an interview with a very old lady who was a dancer in that perticular
performance. Is there VHS or DVD of this beautifull documentary. I was
surprised to find NOTHING of the sort on internet.

Please HELP.

There seem to be a number of different versions
of SACRE to the same Stravinsky score, at least
one in which the central character
is male, and at least one in which the central character is female. I
guess that the ballet has always generated enough interest among
audiences, performers and ballet companies
to have been frequently staged as one portion
of a mixed bill in
certain recent time periods, but perhaps
no extant version has been recorded.

But I am looking for the one and only first version of it.

THE SEARCH FOR NIJINSKY'S RITE OF SPRING was shown on American PBS
programs in 1989-1990 as an item on the Great Performances series.
The film dealt with the reconstruction of the ballet by Millicent
Hodson and Kenneth Archer. The elderly woman you noted was Marie
Rambert, who had been called in by Diaghilev to assist Nijinsky in
constructing the choreogarphy. The ballet itself is shown as danced
by the Joffrey Ballet, for whom it had been restored in 1988.

To my knowledge the program has never been released commercially on
VHS or DVD, and this is the case for most of the PBS programs of that
era. Copies may be available from TV viewers who taped the program
off the air. Let's hope that some enterprising soul can influence the
powers that own the Great Performance programs to start releasing them
on DVD. There are hundreds of them.

The BBC did a reconstruction last year; http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0473080/
This was very well made, and featured dancers from the Finnish National Ballet.
Clearly this isn't the one that you are looking for, but I mention it in case
this version will suffice.

Perhaps the program that you refer to is http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0083065/

I think you might be referring to the reconstruction produced by the
Jeoffry Ballet. (pardon my spelling, of his name). It was shown on
Great Performances on PBS here in the USA. I think if you google the
Jeoffry Ballet you might be able to get a hold of the dvd. You also
could check the PBS site for it.

Good Luck.
